London

As an ex-Londoner, I always enjoy occasional visits to the capital. Two days ago, I took advantage of a super birthday gift from son and d-i-l, a voucher for two to visit The View from the Shard and a hop-on-hop-off river cruise on the Thames. The former is OH’s worst nightmare so I invited a friend. We had a fantastic time! We arrived at Euston at 10 and made our way straight to the Shard, so we were there by 10.30. It was very quiet, we walked straight in and up (via three lifts to the 72nd floor!!) and stayed there for two hours! There’s a bar and we had coffee (yes, promise!) and a pastry and just soaked up the view. The weather was beautiful. We then decided to take the boat to Greenwich and pottered about for another couple of hours, had lunch then returned to Tower Pier and wandered through the City, eventually back to Euston.
Viewing London from that height is amazing and endlessly fascinating. It took me a while to get my bearings. One of the things that struck me was how many green areas there are, and lots of quite formally laid out gardens. Of course, the location of the Shard, in SE1, does mean there aren’t as many close to as there would be further north, but it is still quite surprising. We also noticed quite a few roof gardens on top of some of the buildings.
I am so glad that I am free to have timed the visit for midweek in term time. I have had the voucher since the autumn, but had decided to wait until after the clocks went forward again and this turned out to be a convenient time. It was a surprisingly laid-back day, no crowds anywhere, not by London standards anyway, and we didn’t really queue anywhere. The boat, and even the train had empty seats.

If you are tempted by the Shard, Sbg, get there as early as possible (The View opens at 10.00). It really does make a difference!

London is an interesting place, first time we ever visited we hated it, being from Up North, it seemed too fast paced, unfriendly and it snowed, shock horror! That was many years ago and we've been back tons of times since - we've learned to 'chop it up' into small areas to visit. This means not trying to see everything in one go and enjoying each 'small town' - works much better. Not sure about going up 72 floors - think I'll just admire the view from your photos!

Its a stunning view from up there. I enjoyed my visit so much. We went up there for Brunch as part of our 25th anniversary celebrations. That was the year we went to Chelsea and bought the Garden Pod. I love London. I think is the best City in the world. The museums, theatres, historical buildings, concert halls, restaurants and indeed the wonderful parks. I love it! I will be there again shortly for a very quick visit. Its wonderful, especially in the summer months.

I'm dizzy just looking down on that view. Thank you for sharing so I do not need to go up there. I'm pleased you spent such a lovely relaxed day doing quite a lot in the time available.

Thank you for your comments. I quite agree about limiting what visits to make in London, Sunnydais. I used to take my daughter for a day trip each summer when she was a little girl, and always planned on only one place. We would always end up seeing lots, but managed to keep it relaxed.
A splendid experience, Karen! It was so much more than we expected. I think it might be a bit disappointing if it were crowded, though. There were so few visitors we had no problem getting right to the windows. And the weather made a difference too - it was lovely, much better than it looks in the photos because they are taken through glass.
I love London too!
If you don’t like heights, you wouldn’t enjoy the Shard, Scotsgran!

Fantastic views across London, but eh you would not get me up there makes me dizzy, the strange thing is I use to climb and absail in my younger days but as I get older heights terrify me.

I can understand that, Julien. OH has never really liked heights, but says it has got worse as he’s got older. He can’t even face going into the circle in the theatre any longer - something we used to do regularly. I had no problem whatever with the Shard. I think the size of the viewing area made it seem very secure. I would never have been able to climb or abseil, though, and I wouldn’t climb up a ladder now if I could avoid it!

Just shown my daughter Melchi, she did the Shard a few weeks back and said it was amazing, I didn't let her read it first but she knew and her whole face lit up, I love London but haven't yet been this year, I've been on the eye daytime and night and the views are good from there, I would like to go up the Shard also.. Pleased you enjoyed your day out and thankyou for sharing your lovely photographs..

I enjoyed the Eye as well, when I went on it a few years ago. It looks tiny from the top of the Shard!
