My First Allotment

September 2008 saw me take on my first allotment in Wednesbury, West Midlands where I live. From the outset the allotment holders couldn`t have been more helpful to a `newbie` like me. Dont be afraid to ask and I certainly took them up on that offer.
By December my plot was covered with a good layer of horse manure which is delivered free from local stables and then i had it rotivated in by members.
The new year brought anticipation of what to do and plant first along with watching the gardening programmes on tv and reading up the books I had for Christmas.
Its now April and my first crop of broad beans are up, canes are in place for french climbing and runner beans. I have trenched 1st 2nd and main crop potatoes as well as trying some under black plastic as an experiment.
I have just got in from preparing a trench for sugarsnap peas lining it with soaked newspaper topped with fresh manure and soil. I need to put in stakes now for the pea net.
I am sowing a succession of spinach and have just planted parsnips.
We are lucky that a member here who can get us water butts so my order will allow me to cut 3 in half to make tubs for flowers and herbs as well as having a good supply of water.
Hope this wasn`t too boring.
Thanks
