has anyone got any suggestions as to what to do with this awful front garden
I have just removed some old rose bushes and taken out lots of gravel
but if I turf it the palm tree is going to be lop sided, Im a bit at a loss as to what to do with it really. I was kind of hoping that all you gardening fans on goy would come up with some ideas.

Here is another picture, (doesnt look any better from this angle eh?)
Thanks for all the comments, Like the idea of large boulders mentioned by grenville, The palm tree is in good condition and I would quite like to keep it so I think the boulders and grasses idea would be good. Thanks for the offer of more help Spritzhenry I will take you up on that.

The two main things to think about are soil type and aspect.
Soil - is it free-draining or do puddles stand on it after rain? That will tell you whether it is sandy or clay? And do other gardens in the area grow rhododendrons? If so, it is acid, if not it is probably alkaline.
How much sun does it get? All day, none at all or only part of the time?
Armed with these facts, you can go to the the Garden Centre and look for plants that will grow in these conditions. If you go once a month and buy one or two plants in flower each time, you will end up with an a garden of hapy plants with something of interest all year round

Not easy from a photo, agree with Andrewr but best to look at as many pics as you can and decide what kind of front garden you want. Looking at it now, i would get rid of everything and start from scratch.

It really depends on the style and theme of garden you wish to create, but some huge boulders and some grasses would look very effective. Is the palm in good condition? - If so, you could develop an exotic theme around it.

Could you post another photo showing it from a different angle? I't hard to tell where your house is in relation to the pavement (I think that's shown?) and also where the path to the house is. Is the Palm very precious? Starting from a 'blank canvas' is obviously much easier. as Guybinn has said. Then you could draw up a plan on a large sheet of paper and have fun designing! We would help more if needed!

First thing I would do is get rid of the palm, it's too big for such a small area, plus most of the ones I see can get very tatty. If its an open sunny spot then gravel , rocks , grasses and one or two late flowering perennials like Echinacea Magnus or White Swan etc, and Rudbeckia Goldsturm will always work well.

If you want to keep the palm, which I gather you do, why not remove all the grass and turn it into a gravel garden - leaving the palm where it is. Then you can take up the rocks and grasses idea - I'd use perennial evergreen ones for all-year interest - with the bright perennials too. Keep this in a roughly oval shape in the middle of the current rectangle. Add some Verbena bonariensis for extra pzazz and height amongst the grasses. If I were doing things to cheer this up, I'd also use pebbles in each of the corners to take the rectangle away and complement the oval-ish shape of your planting - along with maybe some small creeping alpine-type plants so as to keep the attention on the central more dramatic area. If you like this idea. lay a membrane under the gravel to stop weeds coming through!

Don't get rid of the palm - its a nice feature - takes ages to grow such things. Like the idea of rocks, grasses ,small phormium etc

Keeping the palm with the above mentioned suggestions will look way of balance in such a small space....imo of course.

Well, there you are Newtogardening! Conflicting advice - so you'll have to decide what you think would be best. Best of Luck!

I'm not a great fan of this type of palm. It's a very small area .... definately do something that dosn't entail much work. No grass - it's pointless. You have some good suggestions already - so I look forward to seeing what you decide. Good luck - have fun :)
