Finally! i was able to track down this lovely Russian Olive tree..i’m going to pot him up in one of my new black pots..first i want to make sure the drainage system works well enough..i suspect excess water remains trapped in the bottom of those pots..might keep the air too moist for him..thinking of calling him Jeffrey..he’s 5ft tall, and normally i wouldn’t try to keep him, this area is very hot and humid in the summer, except i was successful growing one in the ground in my old garden, and i just love the scent..if he fails to thrive, at least i will have tried. i’ve been looking for one for close to 4 years, the nursery only had two, so i feel lucky getting such a nice fellow..Any suggestions for keeping Jeffrey happy will be appreciated..i’m going to insulate the pot with foam sheets, and maybe drill extra holes in the bottom..i’m one happy lassie…

Is there a story behind your choice of name?

thanks, Paulspatch..i'm keeping a close eye on Jeff..that is, if he does well, he'll be called Jeff, with affection, but if he gives me a hard time, he'll get his full name, Jeffrey..that always works with the dogs...

hi Steragram..no, not really..it just came to me as i was writing the blog..perhaps it will help me take good care of him..i'm going out now to see if he should have a drink..if all goes well, we'll become good friends over the next few years..well, i'll do my part, we'll see what kind of personality he has..time will tell...

If he has fruit shouldn't he be female?

I am happy for you that you've finally found your Russian Olive tree, It has a very nice shape.

well, Steragram, i really don't know..are there male and female olive trees? my other tree produced fruit, but was nameless..if Jeffrey doesn't produce fruit, will he be scentless also? that would be a disappointment..maybe they're bisexual..that would address the name question quite nicely...

thanks, Klahanie..i'm very pleased about the shape, especially since there's not a lot of room in my courtyard..he's in a good spot..direct sun, lots of air around him, he'll catch any little breeze that wanders into that sheltered courtyard..hope i can succeed in keeping him..

Ha ha....yes, I can remember, long ago.....my sons would be called by their full names if they were in the bad books!

He's very handsome, anyway!

I don't think there are male and female olive trees. Jeff it is.

hi, Paulspatch..yep, i did that with all my "kids" when they were little..doesn't seem to work too well with 50 yr. olds, though!!..wonder why?

thanks, Ohmelchised..he is, rather..hope he stays that way...

Steragram..whew! that's a relief!!..i haven't mentioned this issue to Jeff, he might be offended..i don't know him well enough yet, but i'm suspect he's a bit fond of himself, keeping all one side of the courtyard for himself..don't want to start the relationship off on the wrong foot! LOL

Sounds as though he's going to be thoroughly spoiled to me!

Steragram..now, what would give you that idea? LOL

Ha ha....great name for a tree! In fact he shares a name with me....well, my second name is Jeffrey so, I'm in good company.
Unfortunately I am not as handsome as your Jeffrey but I am a little taller than him....but not a lot.
Good luck keeping him happy, you are certainly giving it plenty of thought and I'm sure you'll succeed.
