Salad Leaves

Most of us like salad and with this comes tasty fresh lettuce. Try what I call “cut and come again” or salad leaves as they are more widely known – from seed! I have sown my first tranch in my cold greenhouse and after 5 days they are starting to shoot. They do not take long to mature and as they do I plant another lot. With these you can also grow indoors through the winter you can have fresh lettuce all year round. I even grow them in pots or troughs outside in summer. With some varieties as you pick them (cutting is best with sharp scissors) they regrow. Cheap, easy to grow and very, very tasty – you also save a lot and know they are free from pesticides etc., Try them.

I agree, they are lovely.. I grow them every year,in all manner of containers..and they are ready from late April all through the summer..such a great saving and better than those soggy mixed ones in plastic bags ! ugh..I find it's better to cut them with scissors too..

You must have a go,Hywel..so easy..I find those cheap Cauldron type containers are good..about the right depth, and a big circumference..with little legs to help with drainage..but any similar depth troughs will do..
I also don't place them in full sun, more dappled shade..
You don't need too many in each..about a dozen..they don't make big roots....It's amazing how long each sowing lasts,..as Oldbadger says, they just keep growing after cutting....
