The start of the big tidy up!

Rambling Rector has done his thing and rambled all over my trellis, which is just what I wanted him to do. But the trellis was in danger of collapsing with the weight of his huge branches. A major prune job was called for and 7 wheelbarrow loads later and some very stiff fingers from squeezing the secateurs, the outcome :-

You can see the trellis once more hopefully it will grow again and cover up the woodwork to look again like this :-

I also chopped out some grass along the stepping stones and I think it looks much tidier now :_

Took a few minutes out to take a picture of the Phlox in flower in the old plum tree border,

and then sat down to admire the crocosmia in full flow and attempt to do something crafty to try and loosen off the fingers which were so tight after the chopping down of rambling rector. Not too bad for first attempt, more practice needed, first of many candle holders for the garden, just need more jars now. It is nice to try something different while sat in the sunshine enjoying the view :O)

Lots more chopping out needed – starting today with a couple of branches out of the magnolia which has taken over the border and was shading out the plants too much in the border. It is looking so much better and the plants beneath are almost breathing a sigh of relief. It all goes to show a gardeners job is never done. Onwards and upwards as they say.

Thats odd Kath!

It's lovely to have the summer flowers but also very satisfying to tidy up when they are finished.
Strange ....the pictures are on their side so I am assuming taken on iPhone/iPad but that is unusual as I am viewing on an iPad and it's usually ok. I don't really get that!

sorry you still got problems viewing my pictures Kath. :O(

Yes Karen it was in this times issue, thought you would recognise it. There is also an article in it on Little Ratty the little train that we went on when we took the girls camping up to Eskdale the year when Anita and her girls went with us. Anitas girls have always said that was the best holiday they have ever had, bless them it was such a horrible time for them in their lives but they survived and grown up good ens!!!

It was a huge necessity Paul, all done now and will not touch anything else now until winter and early spring. I tend to leave things to die down and I only clear up where the bulbs will be covered by the debris if left it would not allow me to see their flowers.

Karen my crocosmia in the front garden are only just starting to flower. The yellow ones are always a lot later than the common orange one and Lucifer is one of the first in my garden. Honey Angel is only just showing flower heads. :O)

We have a white rose that behaves like your Rambling Rector and I know what a lot of work is involved in sorting it out and keeping it under control! You have done a very worthwhile task and your garden is looking really lovely.

7 Aug, 2016

Thank you Wildrose, it certainly was very hard work! :O)

Busy busy. Your garden looks wonderful and so much colour. I'm envious of your orange crocosmia, not many flowers on mine.

7 Aug, 2016

it is the common one Dawnsaunt, think it used to be called montbretia, it is very prolific and I have to clear it out every couple of years to reduce it or it takes over, but after saying that it does give one heck of a show. :O)

Wow,your garden is certainly packed full of wonderful plants and flowers, and I'm sure you feel better now you have had a good tidy up..nice to sit back and see what a diffeence you have made..My; Lucifer' Crocosmia's are just about finished now,and I'm missing the bright red already..
I do like your candle holder too..well done :o)

Wow, your garden looks wonderful, so much colour. Wish I could kidnap some of you to plan my garden for me :-).Being new to this, reading all these blogs and seeing all your picture makes me can't wait to start introducing some colour into my garden.

thank you Bloomer and Jen. :O)

Bloomer my Lucifer is nearly over in the big border but lots of others still to come out in the front garden, bit more shaded in the front. I do love Crocosmia.

Jen - little by little and enjoy doing it!!

Fabulous!! Love all your flowers....I do enjoy a bit of tidying up at this time of year. And planning for next year..?

8 Aug, 2016

Just love this garden - it's like pictures in an old fashioned calendar. And there's such a terrific variety of colours and shapes - beautiful.

thank you Sandra, pleased you like it. It's a bit windswept today so not been outside too much, but yes love this time of year when we start to think and make plans for the coming year, love looking at all the bulb brochures, too many colours to decide which at the minute, must make up my mind soon. lol.

Thank you Stera, you are so kind. :O)

It's been windy here too did manage an hour in my tunnel today though which was lovely and warm. Picked some tomatoes and started thinking about what to grow in there next year. I'm determined this is the last year that OH fills one side with his blooming marrow!

8 Aug, 2016

Lol, I know, I have to learn to be a bit more patient :-). Your garden is just really very beautiful and if I manage even the smallest bit like yours over the next few years then I will be happy.

8 Aug, 2016

lol Sandra :O) Marrows love them but can feel your frustration lol :O)

Thanks Jen - I have had to learn the P word, it hasn't taken too long only a few years lol and as you get older you find that it is impossible to charge around and do so much in one day. I now take my time and do a little bit each day, some jobs are of course bigger than others but if I have a big day I have the next day off and rest up. lol. I will enjoy seeing your progress :O)

You have been busy.....a big job pruning Rambling roses, looks much better........the garden looks very pretty, the crocosmia have done well this year well worth growing...

8 Aug, 2016

Your garden is glowing with colour Olive, so you are definitely doing it right, must be a delight to sit and admire it all after tackling the hard jobs, I love crocosmia and its doing really well, obviously liked all the wet weeks we had earlier in the year, your phlox is really lovely, only had mine a couple of years but seems to be doing well, if they flourish like yours I'll be well pleased.
I need to chop some trees well back and let more light in but it seems a daunting task, my arch is literally collapsing under the weight of my winter flowering clematis, I'll go mad one of these day with my loppers (watch this space)...I do like your candleholder...

9 Aug, 2016

Dd they are lovely when other things are going over so nice and so bright, found some of my newer ones, which have not flowered before are out today. Caistor Sunset and Vics Yellow think I like the yellow ones the best at the minute.

Lincslass thank you it is hard work being a gardener. pleased you like the candle holders :O)

9 Aug, 2016

Really like your candle holder, I've never mastered macrame.
Seven wheelbarrow loads is a heck of a lot of Rambling Rector, no wonder you got stiff fingers & I suppose it all has to be loaded up & disposed of as well, that's a lot of hard work but your garden is amazing.

18 Aug, 2016

thank you - I have never tried macramé before this and it does get better with practice, the problem I had was finding hooks to put in the ground to hang them on but found some now and they were delivered today. Playtime!!!! ps. getting rid of garden rubbish is not a problem for us here we live at the edge of an 80 acre wood, we have plenty of room to stash the rubbish, good job really or I should be paying daily visits to the tip. lol.

18 Aug, 2016

Lucky you, we have to cart ours away to the tip. How do you stop the wood from encroaching into your garden?

18 Aug, 2016

Wow! Great job, Barbara. Your garden is as beautiful as ever. I am planning to do the same things in my garden this autumn. I have allowed too many plants to take over, I need space for new plants. :)

19 Aug, 2016

lots of work then Micky enjoy sorting it all out, it does us good to have a good clear out. I must start in the HOUSE! lol

19 Aug, 2016

It all looks lovely, I do enjoy a good clear out also, when it all looks nice and tidy, well done.

25 Oct, 2016

Callie these days I have to take it a step at a time. I used to be able to do lots in a day but as I have got older have learned to do little and often. The only problem with that is the darned weather when I am ready for sorting out a border it invariably rains. lol.

25 Oct, 2016

I think you are doing the right thing Olive, one step at a time is the way to go.Thats what I do also, but I agree about the weather, holds me up no end.

27 Oct, 2016

pleased I am not alone. We have had a great weeks' weather here, not too sunny but nice and dry and been able to get the final grass cut done. Lots to do but leaving the majority of the clear out until things start to die down. We are fairly sheltered by the wood and so we have not had a frost yet. Still nice to wander around and see seed heads and autumn colour. Hope you are getting decent days to get out and about in. :O)
