Update on the hole in my compost......

A few days ago I posted a question about a hole in my compost – ie was it potentially caused by a rat or a hedgehog. I had some great responses – thanks all – and decided that I would venture down to the bottom of the garden, armed with spade, wellies and piercing scream (in case it’s a rat)…. just as soon as it stopped raining.
Well the day before yesterday was quite sunny for a change, so, armed as above, off I went. My husband suggested that I take our smallest son along to be the one to lie down on the very wet ground and get up close and personal with the hole. Unfortunately no amount of persuasion, emotional blackmail or bribery would convince the boy to co-operate. What has happened to filial obedience, that’s what I want to know?!
Anyway, for all those of you who are, at this point, still interested….. the hole was empty. Rather biblically, I have literally rolled stones in front of the trapdoors of all three compost bins.
Take that, putative rat!

I'm glad there was nothing in the holes to frighten you. I agree with Seaburngirl - give your compost a dig-over when the weather is suitable. It will discourage any intruders.

The rabbits here like any soft soil to dig in, like seaburn I am in the country, you can often tell by the droppings whats made the holes

filial obedience only works if they want to do it. mine are pretty much the same:o)
I regularly fork my compost to get rid of any holes/runs. and if they are rats well they dont tend to stay. I live in the countryside and they are part and parcel. I just make the conditions less friendly for them. the neighbours had decking and they found rats nesting under it last year. decking has now gone :o)
you were very brave . give it a dig when the weather warms up. it will help the compost to rot down.
