I had a big privet hedge ...which ..over the years was "taken over" by holly...and is now a horrid brute to cut of course.!!! However, the "Scottish Nasturtium" as we call this gorgeous Tropaeolum has run riot and clothed the whole hedge...very eye catching stuff ...and totally out of control...which I don't mind! Better a scarlet hedge for at least part of the year then a dull green one!

Exactly Al...:>)

Wow, have found your pic! It is stunning! :-)

It seems easy to grow here in Northern Ireland....probably all the rain..:>)

Ditto in N.E. Scotland!! It pops up everywhere - thanks to the birds eating the lovely blue seeds! Ever priced a small rooted cutting? I could make a fortune if I potted mine up and sold them!!

lol....me too Al......(we'll be making everyone jealous)...:>)

The flowers look so dainty dont they- must have one. I didn't know it was called 'the scottish nasturshum' brilliant, that means it will grow here!

Sure will! Once it gets a grip...it can be a bit shy to get going - but once it has the bit between its teeth - there is no stopping it!! I would think over on your side of the country - it would go like the clappers!

Thanks for that Alzheimer - what your saying is it likes the rain! Brilliant I can't wait to get it.

Yes and no!! Mine grows out of the gravel - and at the bottom of that thumping great holly hedge you see in some of my pics.....so once it gets established - it will pop up all over the place. I think the birds help...they eat the seeds and well...you can guess the rest!! It isn't a thug though - my only problem is that I HATE to prune my hedge until all those gorgeous bright blue berries are over....they are so stunning . By that time the wretched holly hedge is about two feet higher than it jolly well should be! Just as well I am not the one that prunes it....I have a "Handy Sandy" wot does....LOL

The roots of mine are in deep shade Skillen and the top growth toward the sun......i think this is the best way to grow it.....and plenty of rain.....:>)

Yes, treat like a clematis - roots in shade and head in the sun. Also, try to water with rainwater when establishing, if possible. It is also vital to avoid wetting the foliage when handwatering, even with collected rainwater (for some, strange reason!)

Hi David.....I didnt know that wetting the foliage caused problems....If the weather has been very dry here, i have been known to turn the hose on....dont think it did any obvious harm....?...:>)

Absolutely...I agree Motinot...after all - what is rain but water on foliage.
My lot must be terribly hardy ....it grows in anything and puts up with rainwater on its leaves all the time. I agree I started it off in good ground - about 30 years ago - and it was slow to get growing - as we say up here (!) but wowee it sure isn't fussy now!
Even in years of drought - and we do occasionally get one...LOL...it romps on merrily and the young seedlings - as well as the "runners" cope with it all.
