The above plants, (Morning Glory & Mammoth Sunflower) were grown in heavily organically amended native soil this summer and both are about 2 months old. The plant in the middle (me) stands about 6'3", so that gives you an idea of the size of these plants.
(Sorry for the ugly "middle plant"!) {chuckle}
The Morning Glory on the right is called "Cousin IT" by my wife because it looks a lot like the old character on the "Adam's Family show".. The Mammoth Sunflowers was an interesting experiment in germinating seeds. I prepared the area (4' diameter) with Greensand, Lavasand, and Compost to rev up the biological activity in the soil long before the seeds were planted.
I then spread out a 1 inch layer of "seed starter mix" in the middle of this organic mix and sowed them about 1/4 in. deep..
So far, they have both thrived despite the intense Texas heat this summer. Gotta love it!

The one in the middle could use a little watering because it is very old.. {chuckle}
I'm really pleased with the growth of my mammoth sunflowers. They are growing faster than my "clumping bamboo", which is suppose to grow at a rate of 6 inches per day after establishment.
The experiment on the mammoth sunflowers has seemed to work great and has not resulted in the common "pot in the soil" syndrome that often causes a "circling root system" (Very common with transplanted trees & shrubs)
Terratoonie, I still cannot get over your stunning landscaping.. Absolutely awesome!

Love your attitude, N2... the corn behind you looks really cooked! it's "officially" a drought down your way, isn't it? Great to see a Texan on goY!
