The resident Blackbird has at last shed his heavy duties as dad to 6 fledglings that I know about. He seems to be moulting a bit and doing a bit of sunbathing and airing the the feathers

did you notice any ants around? I've seen nature films where some birds deliberately stir up an ant's nest; the ants pour out in defence and the bird spreads its wings to allow them to crawl all over it; the formic acid that the ants use as a weapon kills off the bird's parasites.
