hi Samba , welcome to GOY. you could try putting grit or broken egg shells around the pumpkins

I have got some barley straw from the pet shop and I will also try using grit, I think we have some in our garage. Thanks for the help Irish.

Thanks! Its good to be here. I'm really enjoying meandering around the site for hints and tips, Its just what a (Very) novice gardener like me needs!

you will soon pick up lots of tips on GOY, and plenty of members do vegies if thats what you like, the norfolk shed is one member so look her up, you will be i awe of her raised beds,,

I'll give that member a visit then. It's funny, since I became a member I have made many promises to myself for what I am going to endevour to grow next year. I hope I can keep up with it all as a mum of 3 and career person. I do find it all so interesting especially all the fruit veg and herbs. Probably because I love food! Thanks for your help.

Good idea. They have a pumpkin vine each named after them, they like that. They are keen to watch me, so maybe they'll have a go!

i think they would enjoy it samba, no harm in trying it, and a few little flowers inbetween,,something to think about for next year, just get it prepared this year, plan it out on paper, and do one section at a time,

I only have a small garden so the section thing will be easy I suppose. Thats why I thought the hanging basket for toms and strawberries was such a good idea. My neighbours tree hangs right over into our garden and I already have one hanging basket hooked onto one of the branches. It was lovely when I first got it (pre-planted). It needs some work on it now as part of it got really over grown and i cut it back to find some of it had died off. Anyway, I continue to live and learn. I also need to do some work on the approx 7 year old fruiting cherry tree I have which every year hardly produces anything, that it does tastes awful or gets eaten by birds, so at the moment its mainly used for hanging the bird feeders on. Its a shame because as much as I love gardening I have done nothing to this tree only feed it home made compost since it was planted. Its going to be a priority of mine and I'll start by cutting it back by the end of the month (well, I'll let the husband do the actual cutting). I may just be posting a question or two about the tree soon.

well its a start and get hubby intersted to, its nice to have a nice garden that you can escape into, and you can relax in the summer with a nice glass of wine and admire your hard work, good luck and keep possitive, it will come together :o))
