lovely colour on the delphiniums Sandra -I've not grown them before- do you start them off from seed early on in the year?

20 Aug, 2009

good question Richard! I've just bought some seeds & need to know when to get them going!

20 Aug, 2009

I've no idea Marie as you can possibly see- but I was talking to someone who will be starting off their sweet pea seeds in a couple of weeks time and keeping them in a cold frame over winter to have an early start next year. I have been thinking of doing that after seeing Sandra's lovely display.

Now that's an idea! Hmmmmmmmm!

hi richard im not getting my follow up msg`s on time here, strange, anyway i havent grown one from seed so not sure, maybe you grow them about now so by spring you should have a decent size plant to flower summer,

or germinating small quantities of delphinium seed, try the following:

Find a small, flat plastic container (such as the plastic tray that cheese wedges come in) and make three or four small holes in the base. Half fill with damp, sterile seed sowing mix. Sprinkle the delph seed on the surface and cover lightly with more potting mix. Put the lid on. Put this in a plastic bag and place in the fridge for 14 days. Remove from the fridge, take off the plastic bag and the lid and place on a shallow saucer in a warm, sunny or very light place. Make sure there is just a little water in the saucer each morning. Your delphinium seedlings will respond very well. Pot them each individually into a small pot when the first true leaves appear.

Great advice again San!! Thanks!

welcome mari, :o)

Thanks for the advice Sandra-I'll see if I can get some seeds soon and start them off early. I can see that with all the planting of different seeds that I will be doing all my inside window ledges will be permanently full.

lol richard thats the trouble isnt it, must be great to have a big garden , heated greenhouse and pots of money to do it all :o)

21 Aug, 2009

When mine are ready to harvest, i could send some to you!

21 Aug, 2009

Thanks Marie you are very kind - I may take you up on the offer if I can't get any.

21 Aug, 2009
