My lovely 82 year old husband Charles, built this arch out of bricks we dug up years ago from the garden,At the time, beyond the arch was an overgrown stinging nettle and bramble field. Fifteen years of work has transfered it into the garden we now enjoy.

The cement mixer in this picture,I use it to mix up soil and manure.I am lucky enough to have a daughter who has horses.
Without the mixer,I doubt that I would have become so keen to grow so much veg. I start everything off in pots ,the soil being too coarse.Every bean and every lettuce and every onion and leek,in fact every singe thing started off in a pot,and that was too much to mix by hand.

Can understand why the mixer is such an asset now - that would have been a lot of work starting everything off in pots.

Hello Bernieh,Gosh,I see you live in Australia.! My ground ,in parts,is lumpy with clay and I find that starting things in a finer, mixed by myself, compost,in a pot which can be transplanted without disturbing the young roots,is the best way to get a plant growing away strongly.
When I first started gardening, after retiring from the rat race,I tried planting direct into the soil and more often than not, things were eaten by slugs.
Since then ,I have tackled the slugs with slug pellets because all this work demands some reward with baskets full of lovely home grown produce. How could I do this without my old cement mixer ?

Glad you've worked it out - it's a great solution and obviously works. Your vegie gardens look very productive and there's nothing better than home grown.
