Fuchsia microphylla (Fuchsia microphylla)

A very tiny flower - not even a cm long!

When I had this it always attracted lots of bees. Do you find that Barbara ?
Do you have it in the garden ?. It's very hardy.

Yes, it's planted near the garden room Hywel. It came through last winter - so it MUST be hardy! I haven't noticed any bees near it - but I'll jkeep an eye open, now!

I had it next to a garden seat but I was often afraid to sit there because there were always so many bees going to the fuchsia.

The plant is still very small, Hywel. It only gets to about 14" high, and it must be coming up to three years old. Will it grow larger than that?

It can grow 2 - 3 feet. I think it depends where it is. I had it in my previous garden. When it was in one place it grew about 14 - 18 inches. Then I moved it, and put it by a shed wall where it was shady in the afternoon , and it grew about 3 feet high. It grew about 3 feet wide aswell.
It got cut down completely most winters, but put on all that growth the following year.
I had a 2 similar ones called Waldfee and Cottingham. They didn't get cut back so much by the frost eventhough they were in more exposed places. They didn't look as dainty as microphylla either.
The ones I have now with tiny flowers are not hardy. I must put photos of them on GoY.
I don't know if I will have the hardy ones again. They got quite big and I have a much smaller garden now. I might get microphylla in time maybe, after I've finished sorting the place out ( Next year I hope .. lol )

This plant is grown on the rock garden at Kew. Its looks great against the stone and mulched with fine gravel.

It is a lovely species type and as said above already, quite hardy. My mums plants gets cut back by frost but makes plenty of new growth each year and flowers very well until the frosts. Lovely plant.

Fab plant, mine also survived the wild Winter we had here on the west coast last Winter, but it is protected. Did not know them to be hardy in Zone 7.

I like it, too. :-)) Nice to hear that it's so hardy! I suppose I already knew that, really, when it came through last winter.
