Sandra, they grow everywhere... in pots, trees, walls, as far as they have some sun, some shadow and abundant water... :)

My MIL (mother-in-law) is as crazy as myself for flowers and plants... but her other half is crazy about flowers growing everywhere... LOL, so she decided to combine some species ... in the trees... she succeed as you can see... lol!

of rain/heat and high humidity for these plants to do

We do receive... lots of rain... lots of humidity and after all stunning hot... temperatures are raising to the 44°C and dropping to 16°C...
Hot rain and humidity is favorable to the plants, but the sudden cold can kill them
I've lost the magnolia ... :'(

Does your city recieve a lot rain year-around? or does it

It was air temperature... terrible!!! Our city has good rain, I remember just one bad dry summer. No dry seasons in winters.

Hubby gave me an white magnolia tree about 3 feet tall, with a few magnolias blooming. Unfortunatelly the hot weather followed by low temperatures destroyed the plant.
the leaves were pending lifeless, I tryed some compost but nothing could bring it back :'(

years...and the heat index was off the charts....around 132
degrees F. / 55.5 degrees C. which was extremely unbeareable
...the air conditioner could not even cool the house. This kind

Did you have Magnolia grandiflora?

That's surprising! It is a very tough tree!
I have one in my front yard which is 35 feet /11
meters tall. However, I don't think it makes
a good potted tree...it has a gigantic root
system. The tree loves a lot of water also...
even though mine doesn't get any water at all.

As a landscape tree -- I'll have to tell you it is
extremely messy and produces cone-like seed pods
which are dangerous if stepped on...because the
pods are so hard. In my opinion, the only positive
thing about this tree is the huge, frangrant flowers.

I just love them... they bloom by my b'day...thats why hubby gave me the plant.
I would like to keep in it a pot, because there is no ground here.
Tomorrow I'm planing a trip to the hills to check the hydrangeas... will go to the nursery house and ask them for directions or if they have another one I could buy.

As been said about the Lord... He opens windows to the best landscape when closing a door....the "xmas" ball flowers will be awsome!!! 6 bulbs ready for bloom.... :o)))

You have a sentimental attachment to Southern Magnolia.
I understand now. If you want to keep a Southern Magnolia
tree in a pot -- you'll have to trim the root regularly, and give it
a lot of water. That's the only way I know they will grow
somewhat well in a pot. Good luck!
