That and the beak make him easily identifiable. I'm learning bird ID slowly...

I'm not very good at recognising birds but I have a book to look them up if I'm not sure!

Yes, I take the photo and then ID the bird at home from the book - or send it to my son, who's a wildlife biology prof!! The latter is the more reliable solution.

Unfortunately Elke, I don't have one of those at my disposal so I'll have to stick to the book!!!

I'll have to look yours up - I never saw one as a child in the UK.

I've only ever seen a few flashing by in my whole lifetime but they have turquoise, orange, white & brown/black I think...it's where we get the colour kingfisher blue from.

He's so gorgeous, nothing like our native UK one but beautiful too.

I'm with our son right now, the wildlife prof, and he tells me it's a she belted kingfisher, because of the brown belt around her waist. I'll wait for Toto to comment on why she needs a belt now...
