Jackfruit - Artocarpus heterphyllus - San Diego, CA

Jackfruit - Artocarpus heterphyllus - San Diego, CA (Jackfruit - Artocarpus heterphyllus - San Diego, CA)

A little Jackfruit getting slighly larger...it has a long way to go
yet. It will be interesting to see if it matures to its 3 feet long
/ 50 lb. fruit. Photo taken Oct. 12, 2009 at the San Diego Zoo.

Mushybanna:

Jackfruit is the largest tree-borne fruit (known) in the world.

I've seen these growing in Africa and they're massive things.
Delonix, have you ever eaten it and did you like it ?
I have and didn't !!!

Yes, I have...and love it! I just hate the white latex in the fruit which is horrible! One needs to oil the knife before cutting into the fruit or it will stain the knife...aslo, it should be done on news paper...or you'll have a terrible mess.

I've never tasted the roasted seeds before though...I heard they are good.

Louise1:

I'll have to try some soon...I have a friend who always buys whole jackfruits...which are very expensive. He usually throws the seeds in his yard and has seedlings popping up everywhere. I'll have to ask for seeds to roast...I'll let you know how they taste. : > )

Incredible. It looks like it's just balanced there!

Paulthegardener:

Yes, it does...the stem is around the back. The fruit should eventually hang down because fruit wil grow
so large and heavy.

Pitta:

Yes, it is a very good tasting fruit. The only thing I dislike is the white latex sap...which stains everything.
