Cardinal flower is a Brazilian tropical rain forest native which is related to the African Violet. This plant is located in the Botanical Building in Balboa Park, San Diego, CA. Photo taken Oct. 18, 2009.

Yes, I've read this plant does go dormant...however, I've never seen when it was dormant.

Course not: it's invisible, ha ha! Noticed researching online that there is a variety that may not go dormant if you can find it.

Had a variety of this in FL & forgot it went dormant, so threw a daylily, an apricot Siloam I think, in the pot as daylilies tended to disappear into the sand. Got quite a surprise when this reappeared and grew & grew! Soft leaves, very nice!
