Wompoo fruit Dove (Wompoo fruit Dove)

These beautiful fruit doves live and breed in our rainforest. There are more colours you see when the dove takes flight. I think this is one of our prettiest tropical birds .we have over 60 different species , some are permanent and some come every year for a visit.

I can call these birds to come down to the bird bath to drink, they are a very shy bird and scare easily.

You're so lucky living so close to the rainforest that you get to see fabulous birds like this one. My hubbie used to tell me about their amazing colours - after he'd come back from fishing trips up at Princess Charlotte Bay and had passed through Cooktown on the way up.

If they where grey they would look like our doves.

We are luckt to have so many birds on our block.
Bernie Princess Charlotte Bay is very popular with fisherman. Not far from there is the only place in the world that the Foxtail Palm grow naturally . someone discovered the palms many years ago and took hundreds of seeds selling them on to a nurseryman Now the foxtail palms are everywhere

Pitta - hubbie used to go to Princess Charlotte Bay for nearly fifteen years just for the great fishing. Yes I did know about the Foxtail - now there so commonplace - as you say ... they're everywhere.

My son bought a mango/citrus farm out from Darwin and there were a lot of huge foxtail palms growing there .a nurseryman from Brisbane told him he could get $3 a seed for the crop when it fruited next . He did very well out of the seeds for a few years but later sold the farm.

Wow ... that's not a bad price for each seed! Good for him.

Now anyone can pick up the seeds in the park down on the waterfront near the old town well , the seeds lie on the ground under the trees.
