I for one would be very interested to know what conifers you are planting ?

Our favourite conifers are Thuja, Abies and Taxus (Yew). We like bright blues and yellows. We prune all of them once a year between October and January but, depending on the type, we prune the feathery growth off some of them to tidy them up during the year. The upper garden is more formal and we keep the conifers clipped fairly hard. In the lower garden it is more natural and we let them go a little. We have recently had to replace some types of conifers in the lower garden with more Yew which don't mind being touched by perennials and can grow in the increasing shade of the decideous trees in the neighbouring Arboretum
