Are they dwarf conifers in there - or is there another reason for raising them up?

Mostly dwarf conifers Barbara. The reason it's a raised bed is an attempt to create a barrier between it and the roots of a hundred year old Copper Beach away to the left.

Ah-ha! That explains a lot! Good idea, in that case. :-)))

I like it, you can look at those beautiful conifers more easily now.
