How do you stop it from freezing over?

6 Jan, 2010

We leave the pump circulating the stream and clear off any sheet ice. I say 'we', but I always deligate that job!
Birds, Foxes etc really appreciate it. :o)

hope your tropical plants will be ok jen :o)

6 Jan, 2010

Oh don't San, I dread to think what I'm going to be left with when it thaws. A load of very mushy Bananas?
Just joking, I hope that they'll be ok, the Trachycarpus, Phormiums etc are incredibly tough and can take it down to -20.
The rest of it is in the house, seriously, we are climbing over the Taro's, Banana's and Canna's to get into bed. It's great though because it feels like a jungle inside now! ;o)))

6 Jan, 2010

An indoors jungle ... great idea to make you feel snug and warm!

6 Jan, 2010

lol Homebird, know what you mean there, I plant...other half treads on, sound familiar? And why can't he climb over the strelitzia, and the orchids to get in the shower...men!

19 Jan, 2010

found a local stockist Jj..we can now buy in bulk..its good quality and even has dried mealworms in it.Keep hiding them around the garden for the wrens to find !!

19 Jan, 2010

I'd love to see that! Hunt the mealworm...new party game???
Hope you got a good price for bulk buying, you must go through tonnes of it! x

19 Jan, 2010

You would not believe how much they eat ! But they need our help so much...and reward us with hours of enjoyment ! Did get a good deal...they know we will be back...soon !

19 Jan, 2010

Glad to hear you got a deal, and you certainly get a lot of birds at your tables. They're such tiny things, no weight to them, makes you wonder how they eat so much really. They return the favour though, as you say, plus they keep the pests down in the garden, double bubble!

19 Jan, 2010

Exactly...all this talk of slugs and snails.Well we have them but also have thrushes in the garden which keep them in check.Find empty shells all over the place and are rewarded with baby thrushes too ! Nature has its order ...

19 Jan, 2010

True...if we stop interfering with things they find their own level.
I've been asked so many times how I manage to keep the Hostas etc by the stream, " What about the slugs/snails? Which pellets do you use? ".
When I say " The feathered kind! ", they don't understand!

19 Jan, 2010

Lol ...so true..We NEVER interfere..just try to help !

19 Jan, 2010

And help you certainly do Bonkers, I wonder how many thousands of birds you've fed over the years! Hope you don't get too much more of the sn.. cold white stuff, keep warm :o)

19 Jan, 2010

Just a flurry forecast Jj...nothing compared to the month we just had ! Thanks for the support...it has been hard work making sure they all had full tums before roost time.Mind you..they spend too much energy scrapping..when there is always enough to go round ! Lol

19 Jan, 2010

If only they knew...imagine not knowing where your next meal was coming from, good job Bonkersbon Cafe is 24/7.... No reservation required!

19 Jan, 2010

LOL.Bring it on..as they say ! Night night !x

19 Jan, 2010

Night Bonkers x

Looks cold there, good luck with your plants.

4 Feb, 2010

Yes Dotty, it was flippin' freezing, had a good look at the stream yesterday and we seem to be mostly OK, I've lost a couple of banana's though. :o(

6 Feb, 2010

Oh dear, were they big ones?

6 Feb, 2010

Yep they were big boys, one of the vents on the garden room was left slightly open right next to it by mistake. Must have frozen then turned to the inevitably, smelly mush :o(((
HOWEVER... as luck would have it, went to watch my Grandson play away at football last Sunday, the game was cancelled because the ground was frozen (could have told them that DUHHH)....what a shame?
Well, yes and no...on the way back we spotted a Nursery that we'd not noticed before, so not wishing to be rude you understand, thought we should just have a 'quick look'.
Would you believe it, hardly got through the door and there "THEY" were...looking more than a little sad, sitting on a trolley in the far corner of the conservatory just waiting for me.
You could almost hear them sigh with relief...maybe I imagined it but I swear they were whispering between themselves " It's Jungle Jen... heard that she's a bit of a 'soft touch', shoulders back guys, stand tall and breath in, ssssh she's coming over."
As we approached, the lure was set...what's that red sticker...is it...no, can't be...maybe...(heart thumping now!)...it is......it...it..it's a REDUCED STICKER....Oh YESSSS RESULT!!!!
After an hour or more of pleasant 'plant talk' with the very knowledgable assistants, the deal was done and the Espace was loaded.
They kindly left a space in the front seat for me to slide into (how thoughtful), and we left the Nursery which was now completely "Bananaless" and minus two (leafless) 7ft Fig Trees that were included FREEEEEEE!!!!
It was a squashed up but happy journey home, accompanied by the sounds of my impromtu versions of "I'm in Heaven" and "YES, we have some Banana's".
Did I hear someone say "SUCKER" ???
LOL ;o)))

9 Feb, 2010

Your a gal after my heart........ I mean you couldn't leave them there to die, now could you? and two, not one fig trees, excellent result lol

14 Feb, 2010

Absolutely DottyD, I HAD to rescue them, no choice in the matter... didn't I ? lol
Yes, 2 (leafless)Figs...seem to remember that you have one also Dotty, I haven't grown them in this country before so any advice would be welcome!

14 Feb, 2010

Restrict them if you want fruit, they grow very big, hubby has standardized ours, looks a bit weird at the mo, if it has made the winter.

17 Feb, 2010

That's a novel idea, a standard Fig...I like the sound of that. I'm guessing that you've planted yours in the bed, but I'll need to 'Pot' them due to lack of ground space so a standard could well be the answer, thanks Dotty! I hope that yours makes it through the winter.

19 Feb, 2010

Will post a pic if it makes it through Jen.

19 Feb, 2010

I'll look forward to that. :o)
