Sandra:

In spring...it seems you'll have plenty of water for your plants. : > )

our water acctualy does come from the underground springs that feed this flood. its so clear and fresh. but it does slow down in late summer.

Sandra:

I'm so envious! : > ) I wish I had a natural spring with lots of clear and fresh water for my plants! I guess you never have to be concerned about droughts there?

28 Jan, 2010

occasionaly we do...the underground spring slows down if we dont get rain for a while. its onw of the reasons i love succulents..when my water slows down they dont mind going without...we havent had a drough for about three years now...but when we do it takes ages to fill the bath......

Sanda:

I bet your droughts don't last a long time though.
: > )

I remember when I used to go to Europe on a regular basis...many of my friends in Switzerland and Germany used to tell they were in a drought because they hadn't received rain in 2 or 3 months. I, of course laughed!
I used to tell them...complain to me when the drought last 5 - 7 years or longer and you don't receive any rain at all for 7 or 10 months.

I think the definition of drought differs widely Andy ... over here drought is commonplace around our country and can last for 20 years in some places.

Here in my area of north Queensland we don't get any rain for around 9 months every year ... year in year out ... but we don't call that a drought. Drought is when we get almost no rain during our 'wet' season for years in a row. We've experienced that back in the 80's when we got no rain at all for around 10 years in a row.

Bernieh:

I actually do know this information. : > ) I've studied climatology and meteorology which I love! Also, it was required to study climatology, when I was going to college and studying horticulture.

We have a similar wet season here as you do...however, it is reversed here...we receive our rain in the winter (when we do receive rain. lol) which overlaps our hot Santa Ana Wind season (I know it's an oxymoron).
January and February are usually our wettest months. : > )

Oh yes...we have the same type of droughts also....with the horrible water restrictions!

29 Jan, 2010

our 'droughts' make the news if we go six or seven weeks without rain.. ..lol here in britain we dont do extreem weather very well. two inches of snow and the country comes to a halt...no rain for six weeks in the summer and they start with the hose-pipe ban...my water slows down if we dont get rain for about 7 or 8 weeks..but as that dosent happen here very often its not realy a probelem....

Sandra:

Wow! We've been in a drought for 6+ years...and just last year we went on water restrictions. Well, it's all relative...and what's the norm for the climate or mico-climate.

You're very lucky not have droughts very often...in California it's just a way of life. : > )

Well, you can tell by my recent pics...we don't do extreme weather well here either. lol. Our weather is generally pretty clear, dry and warm all year...except during a strong El Nino year...which we're experiencing right now.

Sandra:

Sounds like you're expecting some wild weather.

Is your tunnel greenhouse heated?

30 Jan, 2010

its fairly normal for the time of year Delonix....more snow forcast this weekend..doubt we'll get much....
the only heating is in the tunnel in the seed chamber which i get to turn on today in readyness for tomorrows seed sowing...

Sandra:

Micro-climates are so amazing aren't they?
There's a canyon less than 2 miles from my house...it
can be almost 10 degrees cooler than my location at night...that's micro-climates for you. : > )
