Lovely colour, what are those little pink flowers peeking through?

Bernieh:
Love the Alocasia! Is it Alocasia macrorrhiza?
When I lived in the San Francisco Bay Area...I used
to have 8 foot / 2.4 meters tall -- Alocasia macrorrhiza.

No idea what this one is Andy ... not very good with the alocasias and colocasias. It's in my greenhouse so it's growth is a bit restricted ... it's only around a metre and a half right now.

Bernieh:
Alocasia species have trunks...Colocasia does not.
It does look like Alocasia macrorrhiza which will in the ground -- grow to 16 feet / 5 meters tall. They are very bold, tropical dominating plants...and highly ornamental! : > )

Yep ... there's a trunk, so definitely an alocasia and the leaves are large.

Busylizzy ... those little pink flowers are the flowers left on the rather leggy growth of one of my impatiens!

Bernieh:
In a pot the leaves stay smaller...in the ground they can grow to more than 6 feet / 2 meters long and 4 feet / 1.3 meters wide.

I guessed you'd have one of these Bernieh! I bought two at the end of our Summer, they're part of my indoor jungle at the moment. They seem happy enough but was wondering if I should keep them in big pots or plant them in the ground when the weather improves here. I know that they're hungry, thirsty customers so I guess they'll like it by the stream, how do they do in shade?

Junglejen ... I'm pretty sure this variety originally grew in the forest under-story along streams and they can tolerate a lot of shade, shallow flooding and moist, humid environments.
Mine grows in my greenhouse in a rather shaded spot which is quite moist and humid ... so I think yours would be very happy in a shady spot by your stream. I'm not an expert with these plants, but I've grown them in my previous garden in similar spots. Not sure how they go in the frost though.

Thanks Bernieh, I won't be able to leave them out over the winter here, too cold, so I'll have to plant in the Spring and uproot to the house in the Winter.
That's why I was thinking...Nice Big Pot & plonk in the slow part of the stream, rather than disturbing the roots too much.
Can't wait for the weather to warm up so I can get planting again!

Yes I think your plan sounds great ... should suit it perfectly. Roll on spring!!

lovely lush and green

Thanks Preeti ... this was taken in my greenhouse/coolhouse and it's one of the few lush green spaces on my property.

I do envy your weather Bernieh, and some of the lovely greener plantings on your side.

Right now Preeti ... the weather is not so great. We've been having bucketing downpours of rain from a monsoonal trough that was created in the wake of two cyclones! No gardening right now ... but the plants are enjoying the change.

Looks like weve all got better weather to look forward to....roll on spring.
