Xanthorrhoea species - Wintergardens Sheffield

Xanthorrhoea species - Wintergardens Sheffield

There are about forty (Taxonomists no doubt will disagree about the number) different species of this Genus endemic to Australia. A common name for some of them at least seems to be 'Black Boys.' The thick covering to the stems enables them to resist the not uncommon grass fires of the region and re-sprout from the tops after the fine grassy leaves have been destroyed. They seem so delicate and vulnerable but they are in fact very hardy and drought resistant. Give them too much water combined with cold and they soon perish.
