Hu Gina:) you have a huge challenge in front of you - l know how it will be for you - all the job in my garden back in my country I had to do by myself... my husband is a lot like your Nico, haha... not a motorbike person, but computers and cooking remind of him a lot, haha...
I am a student of garden design course - this year we are designing sloping gardens ONLY, haha - so if I can suggest - terracing would be the best solution:) treated softwood sleepers will blend nicely with the surroundings... I can see you are very much into the green lawn, but I have the feeling nice minimalist garden with gravel areas would be a good choice. your back garden is very small - so it is even more difficult to design it then bigger gardens. and my suggestion is - measure it carefully, put it on paper, try different designs... or maybe you already have it designed? I would be very interested to see what the ideas are:) good luck and keep us informed:)

Well it looks small but once the fencing has been pulled down and supports given to shore up the lawn bit thats the patio at the moment it will open up the views to the end of the garden and hopefully look a whole lot better than it is now lol.

so how are you finding your course on landscaping?

Nico is not that bad he does give it a try then goes mad when he cant do the rest lol. give him something that uses his mind with PC or anything technical then thats his domain give him hard work then he becomes ill lol
