Hi Clarice, Yes but all the more welcome when they come back, though isn't it? Do youy feed them niger seed? (other name thistle seed). They can't get enough of it!

Hi Bonkersbon. I didn't know they liked sunflower hearts. Are they sold as that or sunflower seeds?

4 Feb, 2010

Hi Bluethumbs. You can buy bags of hearts at most bird food stockists. We have two 4 tier niger feeders and one feeder just for sunflower hearts. The goldfinches love both !

P.S to Bonkersbon. Have you found a way to overcome all the seed that gets thrown out as they feed? I get more on the ground than they eat, and it goes between the stones and germinates into seedlings. Perhaps if I left it I could grow new thistles and harvest the seeds! LOL

Yes Bluethumbs..perfect tip....get a few wood pigeons !!! Ours hoover up all the leftovers and spillages ! We planted some young teasel plants last year in a rough area at the end of the garden..hoping they grow well this year as goldfinches love the seeds ! Will still feed them as usual too so they have a choice ! Lol
