Beautiful markings.I do hope it isn't another one of those brought in from abroad.I would be a bit scared of that horn, never mind the other insects...

Wonderful photos Uma. I think it might be a Hawkmoth caterpillar - possibly the Bedstraw Hawkmoth. They look scary but I'm sure I read somewhere that they're harmless. :-))
9 Feb, 2010
not only are they harmless..they turn into stunning moths....

I am glad about that.:o))

Hi Uma, if you ever get to hold one of the moths in your hand, you will feel how tightly they grip - I was amazed. You are so right, they are very beautiful. :-)
18 Feb, 2010
MW, I held such caterpillars in my arms several times, it's really amazing!

That is a beauty, we have the elephant hawkmoth caterpillar in our garden most years, they are amazing, but not as attractive as this particular one.
27 Feb, 2010
Hey Dottie we used to get them in our other garden. They seemed to like eating the Solomon's seal leaves.
28 Feb, 2010
Lindak we gave up on Solomons seal years ago because of the sawfly, now I know something else eats it, we will not be growing it again........
28 Feb, 2010
Don't worry DD, as the name suggests, the caterpillars feed on bedstraws. :-)
28 Feb, 2010
It's a beauty, DD, agree with you.
Lindak, luckily this creature doesn't live in our garden. :)

Caterpillars are alright and turn into something really beautiful, being a butterfly or moth.

Oh Lindak, do you remember Mothballs ? I had an Auntie who used to hang them behind the curtains in every room of her house !! :-(

A beautiful object.
