DD - there's nothing wrong with 'normal' plants, especially if they grow in difficult positions. This is growing in heavy clay, sandwiched between a hazel and a box hedge - well not really sandwiched because it keeps coming up through the middle of the hedge!

He likes a challenge doensn't he DD!! Well done Andrew, it's lovely to see so many unusual plants..I'm just jealous!! lol

Perhaps the wrong word to use........unusual plants are more expensive to buy, so will settle with unusual lol

Actually Dotty I'm not sure that's the case because you find unusual things at open gardens etc. and private plant sales. If you visit some open gardens you might well get some more unusual things cheaper than the more popular ones you get at your GC. My local GC is very overpriced...mind you, it's owned by Tesco, so what do I expect! Local nurseries are much better and I have one quite near that sells some more unusual things and is not at all expensive.

Karen - a good point about private plant sales. Yesterday, the Berkshire branch of the Red Cross held its annual plant sale. We had a couple of very strong young plants of daphne bholua 'Jacqueline Postill'. These have recently been featured on Gardener's World (Toby said they were £20 each) and at Wisley, they are priced at £30. We sold ours for £5 each.

I do agree with you both on the open gardens sales, I was talking about specialist plant sellers, at the moment do not have time to visit any open gardens, still trying to get ours up to the standard, to get in the NGS my brother beat me to it last year!! so I cannot let him get away with that lol

I have not tried yet, keep getting cold feet, they say to have them around when the garden is at it's best which for us is late June when all the roses and clematis are out, so will try then, thanks for your good luck wishes, you will know if we get in I shall be over the moon, and if we do not I wont say anything lol
