Osteospermum jucundum 'Compactum'

Osteospermum jucundum 'Compactum' (Osteospermum)

This is a replacement for an old plant - I hope it proves to be hardy, as my O. jucundums are.

Is this the hardy type Spritz? I've just bought the hardy type and they seem to be doing well but not flowering yet.

Oh, Toto - the O. jucundum in my garden have been there for years, and are totally hardy...but some of them have 'had it' as they're just toooo old, and the stems went woody and died off.

I bought these because they say 'O. jucundum' on the label, but as you can see, they're completely different in colour and the size of flower - so I just have to hope.

Thanks Spritz.

The label says they'll need protection in hard frosts in their first year, until they're established.

Today I saw a number of Osteos which were labelled 'hardy' - but I know to my cost that they're not. :-(((

I did have one which wasn't supposed to be hardy which lasted for many years but I can only assume that it was receiving enough protection from a couple of nearby shrubs. I dug it out in the end as I needed the space.

Last summer I put in five new HARDY Osteos, but the constant wet rotted them before they could get established. It's good to hear that some do survive, though. I tried cuttings last autumn, with nil success...I'll be asking for advice this year - I think it was too late in the season. :-(

I saved seed from my Osteospermum's and raised lots of youngsters from them.

I'll need some advice, then, please - I haven't a clue about doing that!

Me neither but towards the end of last season I notice small, drying pods on the Osteos. I picked these off and put them in a small paper envelope until late February. I placed the seeds, taken from the pods on the surface of a pot of compost, lightly covered the seed with more compost and put them in my propogator which is set at 22C and they grew. Probably beginners luck but it did work.

Ha - so as I dead-head all the time, I hadn't realised that you could collect seeds! I'll have to try it, Toto. Thanks.
