Thanks terratoonie, this is towards the bottom of the border which is closer to the south side so does get more sun 2/3rd of the day, suprising really in the summer the garden does get quite a bit of sun, i suppose because the patio is the north facing part!!

I'm never quite sure of the best place for astilbes...
For several years I had them in an East Facing border, in the shade of my shed, but I dug them up in anticipation of the makeover I did on my last-but-one blog...Lol.
So this year, my astilbes are in full sun, in big containers full of compost, and they seem to be doing better than ever... !!!

too be honest, i wasnt sure when i planted them, this was given to me and it has expanded generously, i just put it in the border, but do know that they like moisture rententive soil dont they which i seem to have, i do like how the clump expands its a nice tidy plant, could do with finding out some other plants like this :^)

Yes, I think maybe the most important factor is that the soil remains moist..

Ive got one near the pond and bird bath; the birds splash it on a daily basis whilst bathing. It has always been a reliable plant

Are astilbes related to the wild meadowsweet. They look very similar and seem to grow where the soil is moist.

hi lindak, according to my encyclopedia the astilbe is from the saxifragaceae genus and the filipendula (meadowsweet i think) says its from the roseaceae genus so from that i presume they are not but im not really sure! :^)
