Horseradish (Armoricia rusticana)

Although Horseradish is a hardy perennial herb and is in the same family as cabbage and mustard. It can reach a height of one metre and the roots can grow to a meter in length which makes it difficult to control this invasive plant. Does it behave differently where you are Waheeda?

The area was prepared before i planted it…its like an outdoor kitchen full of culinary herbs, compact vegetables and some flowers.
I grow the horseradish in a raised herb garden which has two levels. From the ground to the first level its approx. 98cm, just under 1m.The horseradish is on the second level, that is approx. 30cm higher than the first level.
This is Styrian Horseradish (Steirische kren) variety, extremely pungent in taste. It grows about 60cm high and has flowering stems in summer..approx 120cm high.Personally, I don’t see it as “invasive” as I have the space and grow it for domestic use, but that’s just my opinion.Others may want to restrict the rhizomes and grow it in secluded area, so it’s all a matter of preference I suppose. If you're interested I could send you some for planting...no problem at all!

I have a funny story about a horse radish plant. .A friend forgot to get a pot for the beef on boxing day. Her husband got into a strop over this. No shops open in those days. He hopped over the back fence and dug up a wild root. He went out for a pint, and she nearly expired grating it. When he returned his beefy dinner was ready and the horse radish sauce was in a dainty pot. He daubed a generous helping onto a slice of beef and nearly blew himself out of the dining room. Revenge is sweet said my friend.
