Wonderful Mushy. Mine fig tree is another fatality of the dreaded bad Winter.
Is the fig on a south facing wall?
Amy: I'll get another and follow your advice on planting ;-)

Did you lose it Dawn , that's a shame , ours is on a south facing wall ... the wall is about 7/8 ft tall I try not to let it get any higher ..... I hope you have better luck next time ... !

Dawnsaunt
Yes its on a south wall side of the house ..They like confined roots..
Amy Ill have to get advice on pruning this year before it gets to big

Amy/Mushy. My fig tree was south facing but had open ground behind. I'll get another and plant it carefully with roots confined. I hope you both enjoy your figs.

Thanks Dawn , I wish you every success with your new tree .... get your lovely clever John to use 2 x 2 concrete slabs for your box to grow it in .. it stronger and permanent ... :-)

Mushy I have been checking up with ' what to do ' with our figs trees and it says pruning of established bushes and fans take place in June . ( that's now ) all young shoots should be pinched back so that only 5 leaves remain .... .. I will be looking at mine tomorrow .... .. ! if you have your eyes on my Ducks for dinner anymore I'll have the chainsaw on yours .. ;o))

Wonderful Amy, as ever your advice is most welcome.
Does 'the box' have to have a bottom or do we put the slabs just around the 4 sides? :-)

Hi Dawn .. no slab at the bottom pack the bottom with 9" of tightly packed brick rubble , it needs to be contained , it needs to be watered in dry weather but don't over do the feeding or it will want to escape ..LOL....

Mushybanna:

Looks good! Figs trees grow as weeds here. I have one which popped up in my front yard I can't get rid of...(just giving you a bad time. However, it's true though) LOL! : > )

My better half is over the moon .She loves figs and to find somewhere they grow as weeds ....
Well if we lived there we would only ever have weeds in the garden........LOL

Mushybanna:

That's funny! : > )

I'll have to get some pics of edible figs growing in the crowns of Canary Island Palms. It's a very common sight in California...and they can grow quite large in the Canary Island palm crowns.
