Grass Snake In My Pond

Oh my goodness Dawn .. well caught , I take it you won't be paddling in there ...... you really do have something of every kind in your fabulous garden .. .. Lucky you happened to be there at the right time to get this amazing shot .. .. :o)

Oh Amy, I was pottering around and saw the water ripple and spotted the snake swimming, so I ran down the garden to the house, got the camera, ran back and couldnt see him as he'd reached the bank then off he set again towards the willow tree, he was so fast. You're right Amy, I wont be going paddling, it was quite big, about 2 feet long.

I thought it looked a long one Dawn .. I would be wearing my wellies at all times in the long grass , oohh it makes me shiver ... you will have to start keeping your camera on your belt ready for instant use ...LOL...

they make the hairs stand up on the back of my neck, lol. I sometimes see them basking on a sunny bank too.

I think if it was in the grass, the cats and dog would be very curious. Bonnie is the only labrador that I've known that doesnt like water, that's lucky or she may have gone in the pond after it.

Am i right in thinking grass snakes are harmless ?

I read an article last week that they should be renamed 'pond snakes' as they will travel a long distance to find a pond. Also they eat the frogs. I had a large one in my pond for a week in the very dry spell in 2008. Only seen a small one this year.

Yes, Im pretty sure they're harmless Louise. I would love to see a slow worm, they like compost bins, dont they, people say they are very nice but Im a bit wary of things that slither too.

Drc, they like ponds then, I thought he was probably having a dip to cool down. Its nice that you get them too but I didnt realise they eat frogs, lots of them in my pond :-( and I still have tadpoles.

wont eat many dawn as it takes a while for anything to digest in a snake, my brother-in-law use to keep snakes and dont eat every day,

Good plan Karen, lots of frogs and tiny fish and of course the snake ... best to stick to the pool ;-)
