The Laughing Kookaburra
Comments on this photo
This is the Laughing Kookaburra, Drc, - Dacelo novaeguineae. It's a member of the Kingfisher family and it's the most commonly seen bird where I live. Our area has a family of these lovely birds living here so we get to hear them and see them every day.

I always forget because for some reason I expect this bird to be bigger!

The one in the photo is still a juvenile, Drc, so it's not as big as it will eventually be. They do grow to be around 47 cms tall.

Thanks

I saw that and wondered what it was, then thought that it sort of looked like a kingfisher - it has the same general body type as the belted kingfishers that live around here. I guess I'm not as clueless about birds as I thought I was!

Lauram ... you were spot on! It's our largest kingfisher.
Thanks Yorkshire. It's easy to get good photos of the kookaburras around here. They make great subjects and are quite happy to sit and pose.
