Epidendrum hybrids Orchids - Reed Orchids

Jeez - I struggle with these indoors!

These are one of the easiest orchids to grow outside here. You just put them in the ground -- give them a little water every so often and they bloom well all year.
It's very common because of all the colors available: orange, purple, pink, red, peach, white, bright yellow, light yellow and the list goes on and on...

I think that it's a light issue more than anything here in the UK.

You're probably correct...as they need a lot of light and heat to bloom well.

We grow them at Kew and yes, they do need warmth (min winter temp 18c) and light. The hybrids are much easier to grow.

These orchids tolerate lower temps than 64F/ 18C. They will tolerate temps. down to 40 degrees F. / 5 degrees C. as long as the daytime temps are mostly above 68 degrees F./ 20 degrees C. most of the time during winter.

Thanks! The San Diego Zoo has an incredible collection of orchids which grow on their very large Banyan trees.
