This is lovely !
What site, soil and position do you have your epimediums in, Ilex ?

Hi Louise, we have them in dappled shade, woodland-edge conditions, on a slope with good drainage....they are growing in the natural soil which is basically leaf-mould over clay, similar to how they would be in the wild - lots are in containers too, which is how I get the photographic close-up's.

Thanks Ilex, it's difficult to find suppliers of epimediums - i've seen the usual ones for sale but the different and newer ones are not easy to find, it would be nice to be order everything i want, in a decent sized pot, all from one nursery !
Instead, they're offered in 9cm pots and from various different suppliers - all with their usual postage charges ... hey ho !

What a gorgeous flower, Ilex. I have several different Epimediums in my shade bed, having been told they're usually grown for their attractive foliage, but the flowers on mine are quite insignificant - nothing like yours! What time of year does this one flower please?

Hi Sheila, this is one of the newly introduced Chinese species, many of which have relatively large and showy flowers as well as often dramatic foliage. Like most Epimediums this one flowers in April & May.
