Markhamia is one of the most beautiful tropical flowering trees. It's native to the Congo region of Africa. My tree bloomed for the first time in June 2006. It blooms every year now. The flowers are sweetly fragrant. Photo taken July 9, 2010.

This tree really amazing me too. This year it bloomed the earliest ever, in May...and has had the most flowers ever since I've owned it.
25 years ago this tree was difficult to obtain and was extremely expensive...now it's become pretty common and fairly inexpensive. It only grows in the very mildest climates of southern California.
I purchased this tree at Quail Botanical Gardens for $4.00 as a gallon plant 9 years ago (it was only about 10 inches tall)...and it was labeled: African Tulip tree. Go figure! LOL! : > )

I am so jealous of your climate, Delonix....I hear SD has just about the best climate for tortoises and obviously plants don't do so badly either! I love your palm photos, especially - the only palms that do well here are the native needle palms & also windmill palms. European fan palms will survive our winters if we're lucky. I'm in zone 7 here but even if we were zone 8 we'd be able to grow so much more.
That's a stunning tree. Looks like it has a long blooming period - nice.

San Diego does have a great climate (It's zone 10B or 11 depending on location). Yes, tortoises love it here...the San Diego Zoo has several Galapagos Island tortoises which have been there since the 1920's and several more have been born since.
We're very lucky here...we can grow many hundreds of species of palms. I have posted many palm pics on GoY. Check them out when you have some time...and it will take quite a bit of time.

Yes, Markhamia has a long blooming period. The large trees in Balboa Park bloom through November.

Thanks! I just started dozens of seeds today. Last year I had several long seed pods on this tree for the first time. I've been trying to grow it from cutting without any success. I may have to air-layer a large branch this year.
