Delphinium 'Astolat'

Another grown from seed this year, can't believe they've all started to flower, and such huge flower spikes, still in their pots too.

Which ones did you grow Dawn?, did I send you some Tall Black Knight?

13 Jul, 2010

That's right Kathy, Tall Black Knight :-)

I can't believe you grew this from seed! You have super green fingers :) Just out of curiosity, where do you usually buy seeds, from a local garden centre or on line???????????? It doesn't really matter where you buy seeds, I suppose, though...Your 'know how' must be the key :D

Buy a lot of my seed from Plantworld Tommymoo, they have quite a lot of unusual seeds, and they always grow, but the seeds for this and the sclarea were from Chilterns, Amblealice recommended them, first time I've used them and the seeds have all been great, also swap a lot on swapshops, go on have a go, sure if you do you'll become hooked like me and Dawn, lol.

Thanks Sixpence:-)

Your welcome Simbad

Thank you Simbad, for answering my question :)
You're always so sooooo kind.
Much obliged :D

Tommy, Simbad has given me the confidence to grow from seed. You can grow perennials quite easily and its so satisfying too. I'll check out Chilterns!
Simbad: Are the Swapshops online?

18 Jul, 2010

Yes Dawn www.gardenswapshop.co.uk, haven't been on for a while all the old gang seem to have deserted, and its good when you get to know whos who as you get to know who sends good plants.

I'll take a look to see how it works Kathy, thank you. It's like that on Ebay, you get to know people, dont you. There's one on there and his seeds are all in Thompson and Morgan packets with use by dates of about 2012, usually for less than half the price marked on them - which is nice as some have obviously been collected by amateurs, as long as they grow though, that's all that counts.

18 Jul, 2010

Its free to swap Dawn, used to be 20p a swap, but made it free this year.
Yes I have my favourites on ebay usually for daylilies had a couple of wrong plants, which you often don't find out till the next year, so only use the reliable ones now.

18 Jul, 2010

You have to be a bit careful, dont you. So are the 'Swappers' usually trustworthy.

18 Jul, 2010

Usually Dawn and you leave feedback so can check what their like before you swap.

18 Jul, 2010

Thank you Dawn and Simbad for all the info. I'm going to take a look at the shops you recommended. Thanks again :D

19 Jul, 2010

Thanks Kathy.
Tommy: You'll have seeds growing and seedlings to prick out and pot on all over the place before long, like us. With constant trips out to get more compost, that's right, isnt it Kathy.

19 Jul, 2010

Lol, too true Dawn, you'll have plants coming out your ears:-)

19 Jul, 2010

Tis true.

LOL Dawn and Simbad~. I bought a sac of vermiculite today (for the first time)! Do you usually use this when you sow seeds, Dawn and Simbad?

20 Jul, 2010

I use it when sowing seeds Tommymoo to cover the seeds it holds lots of water so keeps the surface and the seeds moist :-)

20 Jul, 2010

Oh that was quick!
Thank you Simbad~ :)

20 Jul, 2010

I dont normally use it, maybe I should then.

20 Jul, 2010

Thanks for the info Dawn!
Good to know I can do with or without it :)

I've been reading my RHS Growing From Seed book and it say that grit and vermic... is especially good to cover seeds that take longer to germinate (rather than annuals). Stops weeds growing, I've often nurtured weeds, lol.

24 Jul, 2010

Yes Dawn stops the horrible green moss and stuff growing, remember doing that myself years ago when I was new to gardening, bought a plant from a garden centre, can't remember what it was now watered it and looked after it, when it flowered it was a flippin weed, the actual plant had died and they sold me a weed, lol.

24 Jul, 2010

Hi Kathy, yes, I've had that green moss and those flat green fungii thingies. I've nurtured lots of goats willow, grrrr, Some weeds do look like weeds though, lol, I'm glad I'm not the only one that's done it, at least we can admit it, ha ha .

25 Jul, 2010

Yep goats willow that was the weed I grew too, lol.

25 Jul, 2010

Lol Kathy, flippin goats willow. I've put some netting over my seed trays that are outside now, hope that keeps them out.
