The aptly named Beautiful Demoiselle is one of only two species of British dragonfly that perform mating displays, and it's a joy to watch the males "dancing" in shafts of sunlight. Their cousins the Banded Demoiselles visit us from time to time, flying up from the big river, but these iridescent beauties are resident here & I absolutely love them. Despite last years terrible weather this year they are more abundant than ever before, often with 50 or more present at once, which is great to see. This male is warming himself on a Magnolia.
