Yautia growing outside beyond glass at the pygmy hippo exhibit at the San Diego Zoo. Photo taken July 21, 2010.

These plants are probably about 12 feet/ 3.7 meters tall. The leaves around 8 feet/ 2.5 meters long. It grows to become an enormous plant and spreads by tubers.

Ahhh.... inspiration for my little Eddoes and Alocasia! do they need to be pot bound...or should I put them in a large deep pot with plenty of soil?

In pots they prefer to be a little root-bound. Most Alocasia, Colocasia and Xanthosoma prefer to have very good draining soil in a pot also.

I know it called yautia in the Caribbean, where its native.

That's a nice looking elephant ears how big is it ?
My elephant ear i put outside to early and it got caught by a late frost and it killed all the leaves of which was really annoying as it had even flowered over X~mas but im glad to say it is startingf to come back now :0))))
