This looks pretty. The plant at the front of the pic...
Houttuynia cordata 'Chameleon' spreads runners underground to a great distance, so best kept in a pot. or it may take over your garden.!

I love this mixture of pebbles. I so agree with you TT 5 years it took me to get rid after it escaped through the bottom of a pot.

I'm lucky in that I was warned about Houttuynia when I was given it... so it lives in a container... :o)

Yes its great in a container - as long as it not over the crack between paving.

My Houttuynia is in a "cauldron" style container which has "feet"... so I can always see what's going on below the roots...Lol.

Clever you, I keep meaning to get feet for my containers.

Do you know how to encourage more red colour on the leaves ?
24 Jul, 2010
Well TT mine use to have immature plain green leaves come up and I always pulled them out as I thought that let the red ones dominate? I kept it in slight shade and fed it too and lots of water. It had very pretty white flowers. It was 7 years old, but I got rid as it got into a flower bed and ran riot. But talking about it and looking at its pic reminded me of how much I liked it in a big pot earthen wear pot!

Thanks ...I'll feed it and remove some of the plain leaves, and see what happens :o)

Thanks TT,I didn't know what its name was,or its nature of spreading elsewhere.I brought 2 plants quite small, in the pond plants section of a garden centre a few years ago.It has spread quite well around the pond which is what I wanted.I doubt it will spread any further than the pond edge as the pond liner goes around the back of the plants surrounded by rocks in a stepped fashion, forming a bog.The only piece of ground it could get to if at all possible is the cobbles beyond the edge rocks. The cobbles are about 4-6 inches deep over top ground sheet, that is if they can penetrate the pond liner and ground sheet under that. They are only placed in approx. 2 inches of pond soil and gravel so I would think they are pretty well contained.
Thanx again for the info though : )

Yes its trial and error as not all invasive plants are a problem in every garden Diydick. It seems if I had had feet under my pot it might have stayed there.

I made the mistake of planting Houttunyia in the bed at the back of my pond a few years ago, I do love it but now I have some in a pot and am persevering trying to remove it all from the bed itself, lol.....
