Southern wood fern

These wood ferns have done so well this year. I'd bought 4 but stuck them in a corner and forgot to plant them. By the time I got around to putting them in the ground they were a tad shriveled up. Well, they've recovered beautifully. They're the nicest light green color, and they are either evergreen or semi-evergreen in this area. I have some eastern wood ferns also & they remain green throughout the winter. I planted 3 more southerns this morning next to the bleeding hearts, which aren't doing well in this heat.

I had five of them. Note that I said "had." Last week I realized that one of them had suddenly shriveled up and died.....the one my dog had peed on just the day before. I hope it comes back. In the meantime, I will be walking the dog AWAY from the garden!

thanks Paul, I really love them but for some reason they don't do as well for me as I'd like. I lost several last winter that I'd planted in the fall because it was so brutally cold and they weren't established enough. Meanwhile they grow naturally in Sean's backyard and they spread like you wouldn't believe. They are under the deck and in the vegetable garden and he does nothing to encourage them!
