A white beetroot, which was not expected to grow, it just appeared with the red ones. It tasted exactly the same though and was better i suppose because there was no mess! The potatoes were also a freebbie, because I'd used our own organic compost before we added bought compost and top soil to the new raised bed we built this year. I have more beetroot growing and also I have just put some spuds in for christmas, I was so pleased with the freebies, they inspired me to grow more.

Thats a good Idea (the recipe). My new pots are in those green tubes which can be moved around the garden. I'll have to ask my mother if I can borrow some greenhouse space when the time comes! I haven't invested in a greenhouse yet. will do one day. I will definately try the recipe, will search the net later.

They look great. If you are starting potatoes for Christmas, though, do so in tubs which can be moved into a greenhouse or polytunnel before first frosts. The beets will be ready before the frosts. Try pickling some in brown pickling vinegar with sugar and cloves. Great spicy, earthy taste, and ready for christmas, too. Sarsons have a good recipe for picling as above, but I've lost my book. May have it on their website?
