A new road is being built that will pass by some woods I own, and this scene was uncovered. The hedychium is considered a weed.

Wait a minute! I thought this was the Azores, Wylie, not Hawaii!

At times you can call this place the Hawaii of the Atlantic. The next island over grows pineapples commercially (in large greenhouses), we have tree ferns, pulmaria (used to make leis), taro root, and bananas. The hedychium is so prolific, it is impossible to get rid of. And everyone has Bird-of-Paradise.

I suspect that every place has a plant that they consider a weed, while most of the rest of the world struggles to grow it. As usual, Wylie, beautiful pictures of beautiful plants!

Those will grow in the SF bay area...with heavy watering. The tree fern grove is very nice.

The Azores is a lot like the Bay Area (born in Berkeley, grew up in Albany on the hill).
