I bought these as tiny plants - really for the foliage colour... what a delight they have turned out to be!

I wouldn't be without them!

Nor me now Meanie. I'll need to re-position them though for next year.

Oh Meanie, I was wondering do I need to protect from frost? If so what would you suggest is best mulch. Thanks.

I never have Peonyrose, but I've suffered heavy losses the last couple of winters. If you have a greenhouse or a sheltered porch area, now is a good time to pick off any small side shoots and pot up. If you do have this facility, maybe lift the mature plants in a month or so and put into largish pots to re-site in the spring.
Mulch wise, I'd be tempted to go for straw which will allow some sort of air circulation. That's what I'll be trying any way!

Great Meanie, thanks, I think I'll try lifting and potting them, mulch the pots and store in the greenhouse. what about water? - I've never overwintered anything like this - should I keep it slightly damp just? Maybe water from below?
I'll also have a look for any side shoots. We had such long hard frosts here last year and like you I lost a few, even hardy, plants.

My young un's just get survival rations of water in the depths of winter. Maybe in Inverness it may be a good plan to put the pots in a shallow cardboard box with the pots themselves padded out with straw between them. Leave the crown open to breath, as they hate the cold AND wet.

Aha, the box sounds like a good idea. Okay, we'll do our best and hope for the best. Cheers meanie!

I never lift mine...just a mulch....:>)

I only thought it may be a good idea as Peonyrose is looking to re-site it next year. That said, I've decided to lift a couple of my smaller ones as an extra insurance.
What mulching medium do use Motinot?
