This clump was planted five years ago and has made itself very much at home. It is a sheltered corner, facing southwest and gets a mulch each autumn to help it through the winter

This one is supposedly the hardiest - and has proved it so far

Andrew I think I may have one flower spike on ours, this is their first year in the garden, they were large plants when I bought them and they have spread considerably, do they require a lot of sun to make them flower , and is it safe to leave them in the ground.

DD - yes, they require sun. I mulch mine with fern fronds or straw each winter and it is five years old now - even came through the last two winters without any apparent harm

Thanks Andrew, forgot to ask do you cut them down at all?

DD - I leave all the top growth on over the winter then cut them down to ground level as part of the general spring tidy. If they are likely to catch a lot of wind over the winter, you might want to cut them down by about half in autumn so the movement of the top growth doesn't harm the rhizomes

Thanks Andrew we get a great deal of wind here so will cut them down as you suggested, ours has flowered today...... nothing the size of yours but the perfume is amazing from one small bloom....!!!
