Swiss Chard

Grown by children with learning disabilities, they grow every veg you could think of, we bought some swiss chard and it was just 50p never seen it before and I have had to look on the internet to find out how to cook it,

its a veg PP, yes we thought they were giving us rhubarb, I have looked at the internet and its similar to spinach, I am going to cook it tomorrow in a Pasta and cheese bake, will tell you what it tastes like.

I steamed it David, going to do a pasta bake with it tonight, it smelt very strong and earthy, a bit like boiling beetroot.

What a coincidence, Yorkshire - I was boiling baby beetroots earlier this everning - now pickled to retain that "earthy" flavour, so know what you mean re the chard. Gosh, that pasta bake sounds wonderful; I can almost smell it from here. Am hungry now - again!! :-D)

David, we really liked the chard, and the pasta bake if I may say so was delicious One of the ingredients I put in is cottage cheese, double cream,beaten egg,and parmesan, to this I added loads of chard, then I made the tomatoe sauce, one of the best I have made and we wonder if the chard made a difference.

Well..... you've gotta have a laugh now and again haven't you Y.
May I suggest you eat plenty of them yellow peppers now as they are a super low cal.food.......it may just counteract all the calories from the plum cake and pasta bake lol.

being funny again I see Dick, I can afford to eat cake, I am a size 14, anyway about those peppers, I cut one in half yesterday and tried it, it was so bitter, David said he grew the same variety one year and his were all purple, strange, won't grow them again,wether they are low calorie or not. Lol Oh well better think about making another plum cake today,

Only jesting with ya Yorkshire lol.I did read your other blog last night about Davids purple peppers,does sound strange doesn't it.
Well you could put yours with Davids in the same dish, atleast the colours will be complimentary.

Among all those other yummy ingredients, Yorkshire, don't think that you'd be able to taste the chard, lol!!! I eat like a horse, but a mere 30" waist, lol!!!

Forgot to say, re the purple "Rainbow" peppers, that they were quite bitter, too, despite feeding with the usual liquid potash. I've stuck to "normal" varieties since then. Yes, the colours in a salad, etc., look wonderful, and very appetizing, but the taste is a big let-down. :-((

Have also recently made another of Shirley's cakes. This time, I used Tesco "Finest" nectarines, which I found at the end of the day, reduced to 37p for 4! It tasted GREAT!! :-)))

Have to say, that the nectarine-flavoured cake was a direct hit with kids, grandparents, et al. Have found that it keeps perfectly moist in the fridge for a few days in the tray, sealed in clingfilm.
