Newly planted pot

Newly planted pot

I've never tried an ornamental kale plant before - I decided to try one this year. I'm not sure how they cope with bad weather, though

They are pretty near frost-proof, "blooming" into November in Cleveland, Ohio, where my aunt lives. If you start seeds in July (I think), where you live, the rosettes can get huge. They don't grow much once they color up, though. We start them in August, here.

My first time this year as well...mine got really big but I ended up having to pull it. I noticed tiny white bugs all over it ...I mean alllll over it. I tried spraying it but that ruined the look of it afterward. I probably only succeeded in spreading the bugs everywhere I imagine.

I don't like the sound of those bugs, Floral - but I'll keep an eye open for them.

Tug - I'm not sure I want to grow them from seed - this was really a one-off buy for a particular container. I fill my greenhouse with so many seedlings, you'd be amazed! lol. I haven't noticed seeds for sale anywhere - I suppose they're out there somewere, though!

Spritz: I know Thompson & Morgan used to offer them, but I couldn't tell you about anyone else in the UK. I wouldn't start them indoors anyway--I'd start them right out in the garden like regular cabbage.

Haha, Tug - I never have space to plant seeds in the garden! I don't grow veggies, either, so there's never any 'spare' soil. If I did try them from seed, it would have to be in trays.

Yes, I've done the cabbage thing once. They are really tough! They will keep going through wind, hail and snow! it looks lovely B!

Thanks - I think the cyclamen will give up first, in that case! :-((

I think so too!

I wouldn't worry about the bugs too much, mom has a coulple in her garden, I checked today, no bugs on hers at all.

That's good, Floral. :-)) Our aphids normally appear in spring and summer, so I'll hope they don't find my new kale! It's a bit late for them, I think.
