Early Spring in north-east Downunder: Passiflora foetida (Stinking Passionfruit) (Passiflora foetida)

This is the flower of what is considered an invasive environmental weed in my part of Oz. This vine pops up in lots of places around my place and whilst I try to remove it whenever I spot it, it continues to thrive in places I just can't reach!!

I planted one last year and thought I`d lost it last winter, pleased to say it has returned although hasn`t had any flowers yet, obviously too late this year but I am hoping its stronger now so perhaps I`ll be lucky next year. .....

does it really smell bad though?

I like the bit in brackets 'stinking' lol. You're right when you say 'weed' i keep wishing mine would slow down, no such luck though. Thought I'd lost it last winter, but again, no such luck Lol. I refer to mine as 'My dreaded weed' Lol. I did a blog on mine a couple of weeks ago for Sanbaz to see just how invasive they can be.

someone gave me a cutting of it, I have 2 stems in water...not something I can leave outdoors in the winter. that's why I wondered if it did smell

Yes ... the whole plant does have a rather unpleasant smell. The flower also contains cyanic acid which can be poisonous for people. This plant is also very very invasive here ... all these things contribute to the common name for this one!

Hi Sixpence ... I thought you might like this one! I know you rather like Passifloras ... unfortunately this one is regarded as a weed here and we try to get rid of it whenever it pops up. This one popped up out in my Shadehouse Garden and had to go!

do all passifloras smell bad? (hoping mine might be different) I have no idea what the flower looks like it

Funny is nt it how in some countries they are weed s and in others they re not, shame it had to go though

Floralhead ...I'm not sure if all Passiflora plants have a unpleasant smell. I've never grown any ... and this one just pops up on its' own. It definitely has a smell ... not a perfume!!

Sixpence ... yes this Passiflora can be seen in the bushland around here and it does take over pretty quickly!

Yes I could image it would take over, I ve got one so I know how large they grow.

Ha ... yes, Floralhead, and you know just how much I love white in the garden! Oh well ... not to be.
